Educator Workshop: Art and Race
Mar 5 2016, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Free
Turning portraiture on its head, New York—based artist Kehinde Wiley replaces historical and aristocratic figures painted by Europe’s traditional portrait artists with contemporary people of color.
Filled with both symbolism and images of the everyday, his portraits are rich with art historical, social, cultural, and political references that activate discussion.
In this interactive workshop, participants will use Wiley’s paintings as inspiration to explore complex questions of race, identity, and representation.
Working as a community of peers, participants will gain new ideas and techniques to bring these critical conversations back to their classrooms.
This workshop is open to educators of all levels and subjects. Tickets include free resources, entrance to SAM’s galleries, and six (6) Washington State clock hours.
